Typhoon from Eastern Ukraine Sweeps All Before It

12 October, 1999 - 00:00

Four first places were taken by Ukrainian judo adepts at the international junior tournament called Typhoon over the Tatami just completed in Kyiv. It is common knowledge that any sports event, taking place at Kyiv's Palace of Sport turned an exhibition pavilion, is extraordinary. For the rent bites deeply. We should give credit to the organizers, the Judo Federation, which offered a true feast for young talents from nine countries who gathered there to compete in this exotic sport.

The hosts were up to the task. This was made possible due to the efforts of the boys from two Ukrainian cities. Zarubin and Sotnykov excelled in the most prestigious weight categories of 100 and over-100 kilograms, while the other two — 73 and 81 kg — saw the triumph of Kharkiv-based Ibrahymov and Lytvyn. In addition, the former defeated the champion of Europe, his fellow countryman Kalchenko. This typhoon swept away quite a few titled athletes, reports Oleksandr HONCHARUK, The Day.
