UKRAINE’S BEST MUSTACHE

13 November, 2012 - 00:00

The Day reminds the reader of the Ukraine’s Best Mustache contest. There are men-only clubs in many countries, meant for mustached members only. Some specialize in handlebars, others in straight ones reaching over the chin, still others adhere to other strictly specified patterns.

Our contest is definitely more on the democratic side; organized jointly with the British Handlebar Club (founded after World War II), it is open to any mustachioed male, regardless of its length, shape or color. A beard is the only taboo.

We hope that there are still Ukrainian Cossacks eligible to join the mustache family and maybe vie for Ukraine in the annual European Handlebar Club Championship.

Once again about the terms and conditions:

1. Each mustachioed contender must submit a photo and a short information about himself. If there is an interesting story relating to his or someone else’s mustache, it will be welcomed by the Organizing Committee.

2. The Day will carry photos with the week’s best mustaches (and faces, of course).

3. Once a month the month’s best mustache will appear and its owners will vie in the final contest “Ukraine’s Best Mustache” at the end of the year.

The Day hopes that this contest will help Ukraine’s best mustaches to set up a club of their own and join the European mustache-sporting community. Mr. Conway Chyles of the British Handlebar Club kindly agreed to act as the contest’s consultant, and general supervision will be exercised by Andriy Kurkov of the European Film Academy.

FIRST VYING MUSTACHES

Now we have the first photos. Great. This means that the contest is on its way. Please meet Volodymyr Shykov, an art teacher at Kyiv Elementary School No. 246 and head of a young technicians’ club in the Dnipro district.

When asked how he had cultivated his mustache, Mr. Shykov replied frankly:

“I used to sport a beard, but my son was born two weeks ago and I though the child should see a real Cossack-style mustache, so I shaved it off.”

Well, one might say the man had a foresight, knowing that The Day would come up with the contest.

Once again, every winner will receive valuable prizes from The Day and Handlebar Club.

Every applicant will be asked to please forward his photo, brief information about himself, and/or a interesting mustache story to The Day at vul. Marshala Tymoshenka 2-L, Kyiv 254212, marking the envelope “Ukraine’s Best Mustache.”
