UKRAINE’S BEST MUSTACHE

13 November, 2012 - 00:00

Seeing that contests like Miss Dnipropetrovsk or Miss Kryvy Rih did little for Ukraine’s international image, we decided make up for it using Ukrainian mustaches (good samples can be seen on Ukrainian banknotes, which is also a limitation, barring access to this pocket size art gallery such outstanding Ukrainians as Princess Olga, Lesia Ukrainka, Semen Hulak-Artemovsky, and Ivan Kotlyarevsky who had none).

“The first Handlebar Club appeared in Great Britain after WW II, mostly composed of ex-war pilots,” says Andriy Kurkov, writer and initiator of the contest. “Apart from joint social functions, the men organized charity lunches and bazaars to help retired servicemen and the latter were the only ones admitted to the club at first. Eventually, admittance qualifications were liberalized, the main criterion being the grooming of one’s mustache, regardless of shape and length. And of course every applicant had to have a gentleman’s reputation. Men sporting mustache and beard were not eligible. Years passed and Handlebar Club turned into an international body with independent branches in Norway, Germany, Belgium — practically all over Europe. The Best Mustache of Europe contest is held every year.

We believe that there are contestants in Ukraine worthy of European kudos. Bearing this in mind, The Day nearby announces a contest titled “Ukraine’s Best Mustache.” Every man sporting a mustache but no beard is eligible.

Terms and conditions

(i) Each applicant must mail a photo and brief information about himself to the Editorial Office. If there is an interesting story relating to the mustache it will be welcomed.

(ii) The Day will carry weekly photos with the best mustaches (naturally showing the bearer’s face).

(iii) The Mustache of the Month will be announced and demonstrated every month, forming a team to vie for Ukraine’s Best Mustache at the end of the year.

Hopefully, this contest will result in the appearance of a Ukrainian Handlebar Club matching its European counterparts. Mr. Convey Chyles, one of the British Handlebar veterans, kindly agreed to act as Consultant. The contest will be presided over by Academician Andriy Kurkov of the European Academy of Cinematography.

Winners will be presented with valuable prizes from The Day and Handlebar Club.

Applicants are welcome to send photos, information, and stories to
