Ukrainian National Team Wins Back Cup

8 June, 1999 - 00:00

By Oleksandr HONCHARUK, The Day

Our women's national unarmed self-defense (Sambo) team had to wait for
eight years to recover the World Cup over from Russian athletes. The
Day's correspondent met the first vice president of the International
Sambo Federation and the team's senior coach, Oleksandr NAUKHATKO
and asked him to expand on this success.

"The Russian girls were strong as never before, but our side proved
to be more well-knit and ardent. We gathered our courage and beat by turns
all the world's high-class women samboists: the national teams of Japan,
Mongolia, Belarus, and Russia. As always, experienced Kyivan Svitlana Lysianska
led her teammates, and it is she who set the pace in the difficult bouts
with our nearest neighbors, taking was a minimal lead of 5:4. But, of course,
most applause went to the heavyweight Cup winner Olha Nikolaichuk from
Chernivtsi, for she defeated all her rivals with unsurpassed confidence
and might."
