Ukrainian Warriors Dominate in Budapest

13 November, 2012 - 00:00

There is an impression that it is easier for Oleksandr Bahach, the Ukrainian athlete from Brovary, a small Kyiv suburb, to win the gold medal than to receive it.

Oleksandr Bahach placed first in the European championship in the shot put with perfect style. He hurled the metal ball 21 meters 17 centimeters, outdistancing Oliver-Swen Budere of Germany by 25 centimeters and Yuri Bielonoh by 33 centimeters.

But after the end of the tournament, Drazhen Peric of Yugoslavia, who came in fourth, filed a protest. The protest was prompted by the weight Bahach put in his socks before competing. However, technical committee of International Federation of Track and Field determined this was no rules violation.

A year ago Oleksandr was disqualified for using prohibited stimulators after winning the gold medal in the world tournament in Athens, Greece. In a way the federation admitted the dubious nature of its decision by disqualifying him for only one tournament.
