Ukrainian Women Finish French Tennis Tourney

Olena Tatarkova of Kyiv, Ukraine went out pretty successfully in the open tournament of France. She went as high as the third round of the elimination, where she lost to Jana Novotna of the Czech Republic, by then the third racket in the world rating - 3:6, 6:7, (5:7). She is only the third Ukrainian female tennis player to have gotten that far after Larysa Savchenko and Natalka Medvedeva. Tatarkova also earned many rating points in the qualifying tournament by defeating Eva Martinkova of the Czech Republic (6:2, 6:1), Surina De Ber of South Africa (6:3, 6:1) and Megan Chaunessy of the USA (6:4, 7:6, 7:2). Her play against Kvietoslava Hrdlickova (6:4, 6:1) in the second round also received high praise.

Paired with Karen Kschwendt of Austria, Tatarkova lost to French pair Ameli Cauchetau and Sarah Pitkovsky in the first round 7:5, 3:6, 5:7. Together with Andrew Kratzman of Australia, she went to the 1/16 finals by defeating Eva Melicharova of the Czech Republic and Oleksandr Kitinov of Macedonia - 7:6, 7:0, 6:3. Another mixed pair — Medvedeva and Fernon Vibier of Holland lost to the tough Americans Venus Williams and Jastin Himmelstob - 1:6, 2:6.

Another Ukrainian female player Olha Luhina lost in the first round to Alex Dechaumb-Ballaire of France.
