VOLODYMYR KLYCHKO WINS INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE

24 February, 1998 - 00:00

Last weekend Ukrainian boxer Volodymyr Klychko won his first WBC intercontinental championship bout, knocking out 28-year-old Marcus McIntyre (US) in the third round. His opponent had won all of his 15 professional fights with eight knockouts.

The victory placed Volodymyr tenth in the world rankings (previously 16th). The athlete will have to defend the Ukrainian intercontinental championship title at least once every four months. After winning two more bouts the championship belt will come into his perpetual possession.

On February 28, Volodymyr's brother Vitaly Klychko is to fight 27-year-old Aksel Schultz (FRG) for the vacant European title. His adversary has exchanged blows with world boxing stars like Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield.
