VOLODYMYR MATKIV KEEPS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

17 March, 1998 - 00:00

Kyiv's Zoloty Poias (Golden Belt) boxing club witnessed an interesting tournament including ranking bouts and women's boxing for the Ukrainian national championship. The high point was Kyiv's Volodymyr Matkivsky's defending his IBF intercontinental title in the 58 kilogram category against Rakhim Minhaleyev, also of Ukraine. Incidentally, Minhaleyev is a WBC and WBO intercontinental finalist.

The challenger is known as an excellent defensive boxer, and in the early rounds of the 12-round bout, Matkivsky was hard pressed to penetrate his defense. But in the sixth round the champ was able to deliver a series of devastating blows to the challenger's head, and the latter lost on a technical knockout.

Vitaly Kopytko of Ivano-Frankivsk won the nation's title in the 78 kilogram category against Kostiantyn Shved of Kyiv.
