Where is the best holiday spot?

25 July, 2006 - 00:00

We usually vacation on the sultry days of summer. Each of us wants to plan his/her summer break in the best way in order to gain as many impressions as possible at the lowest possible cost. Besides, it is difficult to make a choice — our native Ukrainian land or fashionable foreign resorts. We have tried to find out what our celebrities choose.

Yuriy MAKAROB, TV journalist, 1+1 Studio:

“I am not sure I will have a vacation. Maybe, I’ll manage to go to the Carpathians for two weeks, for I like the mountains better than the sea. I don’t think it is wise to travel to, say, Austria or even Bulgaria when you have the Carpathians. And it is close by. You can go for a few days and then come back if circumstances change. But, in principle, I would not mind chilling out, at least theoretically, in Austria or Hawaii.”

Volodymyr HORIANSKY, actor:

“I have already vacationed in Prymorsk, near Vilkovo, ‘the Ukrainian Venice.’ In my view, this preserve is a very nice place. I think one should change his priorities in this matter, so this year I decided to stay back in Ukraine. Now I am going to travel to the Carpathians to pick strawberries and blackberries. I want to chill out in the countryside.”

Andriy KURKOV, writer:

“I have already been with my children to Britain this summer (I in fact worked there). Now my family and I are vacationing in Mykolayiv oblast. I think there are many all-purpose holiday spots in Ukraine. Apart from the Crimean peninsula, we have a sea coast in the Odsa and Mykolayiv regions, where you can spend your holiday. And I always find time to be with my family.”

Maria BURMAKA, singer:

“I don’t know where I’ll be vacationing. Last year I was in the Crimea. In principle, everybody should decide for himself where to spend a vacation — in or out of Ukraine. It depends on what one is seeking out. I like vacationing abroad: there is a goof locality there and very few know me. Besides, there are not so many tours in this country, when you can discover something new. Conversely, you have a chance to gain a lot of new impressions outside Ukraine. Still, if you only have three to five days to spare, you’d better go to the Crimea for a vacation.”
