YOUNG BEAUTIES VIE IN KYIV

17 March, 1998 - 00:00

The sixth annual Deryugina Cup Ф98 artistic gymnastics championships took place in Kyiv. Last year Ukraine won the Grande Prix, the sole such honor held by Ukraine.

Gymnasts from 25 countries competed in the jump rope, hula hoop, Indian clubs, and finish tape. Russian Atlanta Olympics silver medalist Yana Batirshina took three of the four first prizes with the other going to last year's world champion, Olena Vitrychenko. Interestingly, the Indian clubs competition showed one perfect score of 1000. Batirshina won because the judges awarded her for the complexity of her routine. In general, the two competitors shared all the silver and gold, leaving others to fight over the bronze. One bronze medal went to Deryugina School alumna Tamara Yerofeyeva, reports The Day correspondent Dmytro Dubovys.
