Recently Den/The Day newspaper received a letter that read:

“Dear Ms. Ivshyna! I think I will be right in saying that children in their artistic creativity can notice such details that are often not seen by adults. I have found proves of that many times when I looked at my children’s drawings. One of these drawings made by my eight-year-old daughter Olha I am sending to you. Why? You can understand the reason if you take a closer look at the drawing. Best regards, Serhii Maryniokha.”

We got in touch with Mr. Maryniokha and found out that he sees such drawings quite often. Similar surprises on the occasion of his birthday, other holidays, or even “for no particular reason” the man often finds under his pillow. “In fact, this drawing was also found in the evening under my pillow,” said Maryniokha. When asked why she drew Den/The Day newspaper and not some other paper, the child replied: “Because I like red and there is a nice red circle that resembles the sun.” So, The Day decided to talk to the resident of the village of Birky (Volyn oblast) and see for how long the daughter of Serhii Maryniokha sees Den/The Day newspaper in their home.

“I first came across Den newspaper about three years ago,” told Maryniokha. “I occasionally bought Friday issues (unfortunately, out in the small villages it is a luxury to get all the issues of your newspaper and even in order to get the Friday issue you need to be quick because someone might get it before you and then it’s gone). I liked the newspaper but because back then I subscribed four other papers I hesitated about adding another one on the list – I was afraid that I would not have time to read them all. But a little over a year ago I got a subscription for the period of October-December and soon after that I got a one-year subscription for 2013. By the way, I will make sure to have Den regularly in the coming year too. I am the only one who reads the newspaper in our family. But I sometimes give the older issues to my dad, who worked as a journalist for 38 years and from 1993 through 2005 was the editor-in-chief of our raion newspaper and retired from this post.”

Answering the question about what Den is associated with for Maryniokha’s daughter, he said: “It is hard to give a definite answer. Perhaps, with the fact that she sees this newspaper most often in daddy’s hands – Den has such format that you need at least two hours to read one issue, and when it’s the Friday issue even four hours might not be enough…”
