Kyiv’s Kolo Art Gallery offers the public an opportunity to get acquainted with some unusual Ukrainian artists. Once a month residents of Kyiv will be able to explore works by a certain artist at the trade and entertainment center Arena City. The project was launched with an exhibit by the Kyiv sculptor and painter Oleksandr Ahafonov, who presented ten new sculptures and paintings created over the past three or four years.

In his childhood Oleksandr made his first pencil and watercolor drawing of polar bears and a walrus from the book Ridna mova (Mother Tongue). This determined the choice of his future occupation. He took up painting in the fifth grade. Today he describes himself as a universal artist. He uses a variety of techniques: oil, watercolor, bronze, gold, glass, steel, brass, tortoise, stucco, and wood (lime, walnut, and alder).

Ahafonov says it is hard to work with just any kind of material: “It all depends on how you feel, your mood, your preferences, what you really like.” However, he stresses that all his works are like facets of a large crystal, each interesting in its own way.
