“Under the newspaper’s influence, we’re changing for the better”

“A GLANCE FROM THE 20TH CENTURY” — THAT VERY PHOTO / Photo by Yevhen KRAVETS and Borys FILIPCHENKO, Town of Brovary

In congratulating The Day on its 9th anniversary, I would like to express a few words of gratitude to the journalists and authors of articles that provide a philosophical slant on events, which over the past several years have helped me gain an accurate idea and understanding of what is happening in the political life of this country. I especially like historical features that recount the glorious events of Ukraine’s past. I am thankful to Klara Gudzyk for her “Apocrypha” and her indefatigable and consistent work to unravel religious problems. I am very glad that this newspaper offers room for readers’ comments, including mine. I think your newspaper is helping us to change for the better, by urging us to respond to charitable actions undertaken by The Day, such as collecting books for the library in the village of Chornukhy, in which I took part, and other projects. I am always very interested to find about and purchase new books from The Day’s Library Series, which can satisfy the taste of any booklover. I consider myself a reader and friend of this newspaper, and whenever possible, I try to attend the book launches. Whenever I have visited The Day’s photo exhibits, which reflect the diversified panorama of life in our country, I have found myself thinking that this is the newspaper’s only undertaking in which I have not taken part. This year I convinced myself to submit a 30-year-old photo to The Day’s popular contest. The photo shows a horse-drawn cart heaped with hay, against the backdrop of an apple tree in blossom. The cart is packed with a group of boys and girls aged between 3 and 5, all staring into the camera, as though they are trying to glimpse The Day’s tomorrow, expecting something unusual to occur. I know all these youngsters by name; they have grown up before my very eyes. I call this photo “A Glance from the 20th Century.” I am not upset that my picture was not included in the photo exhibit. It could not compete with the art of modern photography, but it was important for me to take part in the contest and attend the opening ceremony. The Day is different from other periodicals, and that’s what makes it superior to other papers. I sincerely wish you the best of creative success.
