Unique forest museum opens in Volyn oblast

28 October, 2008 - 00:00

The Volyn Forest Museum has opened in the Lopaten forest tract in Kivertsi raion. According to Ukrinform, the initiative to launch the museum came from Bohdan Kolisnyk, the head of the regional forestry and hunting department. The museum occupies two rooms on the first floor of a good-sized two-storey building.

The exhibits reconstruct the fascinating story of forestry and hunting in Volyn from the princely era of Kyivan Rus’ until the present day. They also highlight the devoted work of employees whose efforts have helped make the Forestry Management Department of Volyn oblast one of the Ukrainian leaders in this sector.

The textual information is complemented by rare artifacts, including implements, ancient signboards, and badges worn by forest wardens, as well as hunting trophies and other types of memorabilia. A wooden lodge, an exact replica of a forest ranger’s 19th-century abode, has been built next to the museum.

An eco trail takes visitors to a place where visitors can observe demonstrations of a working ancient oven, grindstones, and mortar. Guests can learn about the local forests, the flora and fauna of the region, and its wildlife reserves, and also relax in a specially designed room. An open-air classroom with wooden benches is available for groups of visiting schoolchildren
