The exhibition “James Mace – Heart Devoted to Ukraine” dedicated to the memory of the American historian, political scientist, the researcher of Holodomor of 1932-33 in Ukraine, and the author of The Day launched at the National Museum “Memorial to Victims of Holodomors in Ukraine.”

In the museum’s Memory Hall there is the desk that belonged to James Mace. On the desk there are a computer, sheets of paper with Mace’s writing on them, glasses, and baseball cap. It seems that Mace has just gone out for a few minutes… The organizers of the exhibition told that they wanted to bring the personality of Mace closer to people through his personal belongings. At the exhibition one can see books from historian’s personal library and Mace’s own Bible (printed in 1836), rewards and diplomas, his writings and photographs. The exhibits were given by Natalia Dziubenko-Mace widow of James Mace, by the scientific archives of the National University Kyiv Mohyla Academy, and The Day newspaper.

It is noteworthy that the first visitors of the exhibition were university students. Many of them have heard about Mace for the first time there and got interested. “I was interested in facts about the Holodomor since I was at school but I have never heard about James Mace before. It is striking that the American man did so much for Ukraine. I want to learn more about this man,” Karyna DROHA, first year student at Kyiv National Institute of Culture and Arts shared her impressions with The Day.

Widow of James Mace Natalia Dziubenko-Mace said that Mace always counted especially on youth regarding the research of the Holodomor and restoration of national memory: “When James was dreaming of happy and independent Ukraine he always said that it would be built by his students. He greatly loved and counted on Ukrainian young people.”

The exhibition will be open for a month. It will begin the series of exhibitions devoted to the researchers of the Holodomor of 1932-33 in Ukraine.
