27 January, 2014 - 19:16

Dnipropetrovsk residents who gathered at the Shevchenko monument to celebrate the Day of Unity of Ukraine have nominated Serhii Nigoyan who died at the barricades in Kyiv for the Hero of Ukraine title.

The rally in memory of the 20-year-old activist of Euromaidan was attended by about 200 people. After a solemn prayer for Ukraine, the priest celebrated a memorial service for Nigoyan who was killed in Kyiv. People who spoke at the rally called on police officers to disobey criminal orders of their superiors. In addition, someone put forward a proposal which was supported by all present to nominate the deceased resident of Dnipropetrovsk for the Hero of Ukraine title. Participants of a human chain which connected two banks of the Dnipro via the New Bridge also paid tribute to those killed in Hrushevskoho Street with a minute of silence. They attached black mourning bands to state flags of Ukraine, and some of the activists carried out printouts of Nigoyan’s photo portrait. “Of course, we have nowhere to turn now to confer the title of Hero of Ukraine on Nigoyan. However, we will have this initiative documented and raise the issue immediately after the change of government in Ukraine,” one of the coordinators of Dnipropetrovsk Euromaidan Anatolii Sokorynsky said. “Meanwhile, we raised money for Nigoyan’s funeral and passed it to the family.”

Dnipropetrovsk Oblast State Administration (DOSA)’s head has promised to help with the funeral of Nigoyan, the region’s resident who died at Euromaidan in the nation’s capital. “He was not his family’s primary breadwinner, so we will cover only funeral costs,” the DOSA’s head Dmytro Kolesnykov told the press. Making a statement on the situation in Ukraine at a session of the regional council, the governor expressed his condolences on the death of one of the region’s residents. “We have seen bloodshed and first casualties in Kyiv in Hrushevskoho Street. Unfortunately, a resident of our region was among them. This is a terrible tragedy when a young lad is killed in peacetime. Speaking personally as well as on behalf of all regional councilors, I would like to express deep regret over the incident and offer sincere condolences to the bereaved family,” Kolesnykov said. The regional leadership communicated to the press that provision of funeral aid is already underway.
