After three years as US ambassador to Japan, the daughter of the 35th US President John F. Kennedy (JFK) Caroline lately made a statement about a historical turning point in her career. According to the New York Post, she expressed her intention to run for the Senate in 2018. “This is absolutely amazing news, as it is about time for a Kennedy to be involved in American politics again,” wrote bipartisanreport.com.

Let us recall that Caroline Kennedy was the first woman to be appointed US ambassador to Japan. Prior to that, the position had been occupied by men since 1856. The US has a practice of political appointments to ambassadorial offices. In this way, the head of state repays their supporters for their support during the campaign. The 44th president, Democrat Barack Obama, appointed Kennedy as ambassador to Japan. It is known that the new Republican President Donald Trump stated on the inauguration day that all political ambassadors had to leave office. Therefore, 59-year-old Kennedy immediately packed her belongings and left Japan.

While in office, she played a key role in organizing the historic Obama visit to Hiroshima in May 2016 and the visit of Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe to Pearl Harbor in December past year.

During her term, she worked on serious issues including those of whaling and proliferation of nuclear weapons, and before that she worked at her uncle Ted Kennedy’s mission called “Cause of My Life.”

The New York Post’s sources said that Kennedy not only bet on a Senate seat, but could also run for president in 2020: “Caroline had a successful ambassadorial run in Japan and feels really very confident about putting her hat in the ring for a New York congressional or Senate seat, with even possibly bigger political objectives down the road.”

According to another source, Kennedy has Hillary Clinton’s level of experience but without the dark cloud that hangs over the head of Clinton: “Caroline is seen in some quarters as the next Hillary Clinton. She has the Kennedy name but no Clinton baggage.”

“It makes sense,” believes bipartisanreport.com. “The Kennedy family are long standing Democrats, and well respected politicians who have made history time and again. They have a dignity that is such a rare find in modern day politicians, and after four years of Trump, even the GOP will be clamoring for a Kennedy to lead.”
