The head of the International Monetary Found, 62-year-old Dominique Strauss-Kahn was arrested in the US and charged with sexual harassment. He appeared in a New York court yesterday late at night (East European time). Strauss-Kahn may be imprisoned for 20 years. The suspect plead not guilty, a position supported by his wife. The French government asked that the presumption of innocence principle be respected. According to its official representative Francois Baroin, people should be “extremely careful when analyzing, commenting and coming up with conclusions.” The IMF has not commented on the arrest and continues its normal work. The IMF head was arrested on Sunday night at New York’s John F. Kennedy airport several minutes before his Air France flight left for Paris. The New York police charged him with sexual assault on a chambermaid of the Manhattan hotel where Strauss-Kahn had stayed. The pro-secutors are charging him with “attempted rape, engaging in an illegal sexual act and unlawful arrest.” The chambermaid was to clean a supposedly empty suite. According to her account, a naked Strauss-Kahn came out of the bathroom, grabbed her, dragged her to the bedroom and started soliciting her. This is not the first clash with the law for Strauss-Kahn. In 2008 the IMF held an inquiry, suspecting that he used his official position for personal purposes. The cause for the investigation were the events of December 2007, when Strauss-Kahn corresponded with one of the IMF employees, expressing a wish to make their relations “closer.” Later the employee’s husband, who also worked in the IMF saw those e-mails. After the inquiry the IMF expressed its regrets concerning Strauss-Kahn’s relations with his colleague and called them “a serious error.” However, they decided to leave him at the position of IMF head. French politicians and political experts believe that Strauss-Kahn, who had been a potential front-runner in the upcoming French presidential election, will now have to abandon such ambitions, leaving the French left deprived of its most prominent figure.
