A burial site believed to contain the remains of one of the Golitsyn princes
was discovered during renovation works on the grounds of St. George’s Monastery
in the Balaklava section of Sevastopol.
The excavator’s bucket lifted a marble plate, damaging a burial vault
when digging around the foundation of the ruins of a church. Inside the
vault was a zinc coffin containing a half-decomposed body. Scientists believe
that it was embalmed, so the upper part was still identifiable. Chronicles
testify that the vault contains the remains of Aleksandr Golitsyn, Minister
of Education whose will provided that he be buried on the monastery grounds.
about 160 years ago. At present, the remains are at a Sevastopol church
in preparation for reburial.
