Jazz stars will gather in Kyiv
On October 29-31, the Third International Jazz Festival “Jazz in Kyiv” will be held in the capital. The International Center for Culture and Arts (the Zhovtnevy Palace) will become the main concert venue. World jazz stars will visit our capital: the Argentinean Dino Saluzzi, the American bands Yellowjackets and Oregon, and the quartet of the famous American guitarist Lee Ritenour. Herbie Hancock, one of the most influential jazzmen of the 20th century, will be the headliner of the festival. Saluzzi, one of the most famous performers on bandoneon in the world, will open the program. The artist of the most famous German recording label ECM will represent his last release in Ukraine — the album El Encuentro. The album includes music specially composed for bandoneon, cello, and orchestra. The German cellist Anja Lechner and the Kyiv orchestra “New Era Orchestra” (conductor Tetiana Kalinichenko) will play together with Saluzzi at the festival. The famous American jazz fusion group Yellowjackets will play in the second part. The American quartet Oregon will open the second day of the festival. This folk jazz band with over thirty year’s experience will present their most recent release — the album 1,000 Kilometers. Then the prominent American guitarist Lee Ritenour, who has managed to erase borders between music styles and trends in his work, will appear on stage. On October 31 the legend of jazz, the American pianist Herbie Hancock, will perform in Kyiv. The owner of 12 Grammy awards (including the nomination “Album of the Year” for the disc River: The Joni Letters) will present his big program “The Imagine Project.” Jazz movie projections and workshops will take place within the framework of “Jazz in Kyiv 2010.”
