Question to the Birthday Boy

“Some years ago translator Yuri (George) Sklyar came to me and said that there was a project to set up an English language digest. I thought that this would give Ukraine greater access to world intellectual discourse and that this was very important. Then Ukraine was isolated from intellectual and cultural discourse to the Western world. The appearance of an English-language newspaper written by Ukrainian journalists themselves was a very important stage in this integration, and now we have not only direct access to the Internet but those abroad also have direct access to us, to what we think, and to how we see the world, through The Day.

“Beginning any new project is difficult. We worked on weekends and finished at 10:00 p.m., but at last we got used to the specifics of our project, and everything became simpler and easier. Today I can say that I feel like this digest is my own child.

“ The Da’s journalistic standards are very high, and my job is that everything reads all right in English. I expect the paper to become even more objective and professional. I am proud that my life has become bound up with The Day .”

PS. Today at 3:30 p.m. in Kyiv’s House of the Teacher in the Great Hall will be a meeting with James Mace at which all who wish to attend are invited.

The Day staff offers its hearty greetings to our colleague. We are fortunate to work next to such an interesting and well-wishing person. It makes us demand more from ourselves and feel more responsible for what is happening. James Mace gives us the joy of dealing with a brilliant person and very good company.
