1769: Ivan Kotliarevsky, a Ukrainian author and first new Ukrainian literary classic, is born in Poltava.

1913: Military pilot Pyotr Nesterov becomes the world’s first person to fly a loop (later known as the Nesterov loop).

1920: Aviant Aircraft Works (State Aircraft Works No. 1) is founded in Kyiv.

1941: After pitched battles Soviet troops retreat from Chernihiv.

1944: The government of the Ukrainian SSR and the Polish Committee of National Liberation sign an agreement on the evacuation of Ukrainians from Polish territory and Poles from Ukrainian territory.

1961: The Ukrainian Ice Ballet Ensemble premieres in Kyiv.

1975: The Council of Ministers of the USSR adopts a decree founding an industrial institute in Zaporizhia.

1976: The first stage of the Lysychansk Oil Refinery becomes operational.

1996: The US House of Representatives passes a resolution in support of Ukraine.
