1918: The Council of Ministers of Ukraine passes a bill instituting chairs of the Ukrainian language, literature, Ukrainian history and Ukrainian law at the universities of Kyiv, Odesa, and Kharkiv.

1919: The Army of the Ukrainian National Republic and the Ukrainian Galician Army liberate Kyiv from the Bolsheviks.

1924: The Polish government bans the usage of Ukrainian at the government institutions of Eastern Galicia (Halychyna).

1940: Soviet law enforcement agencies complete the third stage of deportation of residents (240,000 persons) in the west of Ukraine.

1994: Ukrainian track-and-field athlete Serhii Bubka sets a world record in the pole vault: 6.14 meters. It is the 30-year-old athlete’s 35th record that will remain unmatched.

1996: The Narkobiznes inter-agency automated data bank on trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances is established in Ukraine.
