1708: Peter I orders the formation of Russia’s first eight gubernias, centered in Moscow, St. Petersburg (known as Ingermanland Gubernia until 1710), Kyiv, Smolensk, Arkhangelsk [a.k.a. Archangel], Kazan, Azov, and Siberia.

1724: Date of death of Pavlo Polubotok, Moscow-appointed Hetman of Ukraine, incarcerated at the Peter and Paul Fortress by Peter I of Russia.

1927: Anton Makarenko heads a juvenile corrective labor commune [referred to as “labor school”] named after Dzerzhinsky in a suburb of Kharkiv.

1964: Launch of Kyiv Hydropower Station’s first turbo generator.

2004: The Central Election Committee of Ukraine issues a statement to the effect that, after duly processing one hundred percent of election protocols, Viktor Yushchenko wins by 52 percent compared to Viktor Yanukovych’s 44.19 percent of ballots cast.
