Donor bank for cancer sick children set up in Ukraine

23 March, 00:00

The first donor bank for cancer sick children in Ukraine was recently set up in Odesa. It is a database of people who are eager to donate their blood to little patients, reports Liha.

Anton Davydchenko, leader of the Kolokol youth social organization, told that the bank launch became the result of the “Donate blood & save a child’s life” campaign, which was carried out in Odesa from February18 until March 10. Around 400 city citizens, mostly students. answered the call. “After the campaign the regional hospital for children decided to set up a database of donors for cancer sick children who are in intensive care. All young people were examined and they gave their contacts for collaboration in the future. There is no similar donor databank in Ukraine,” noted Davydchenko and added that Kolokol decided to continue the “Donate blood & save a child’s life” campaign until June 16 after they had seen the fruit of their work. “After the campaign is over we plan to create an Internet resource where all the information about people who need donor blood will be published. Also there will be a donor bank where everybody will be able to add himself and save somebody’s life that way,” he said.
