Help children with cancer!

The “Donors to Children” campaign has been launched in Rivne region. The organizers hope that it will help children who have been diagnosed with cancer. For such children, blood products are vital, but the problem of finding donors is quite acute. “The fact is, the potent drugs used in treating cancer are detrimental not only to the tumor, but to the organism as a whole. These children suffer from virtual, albeit temporary cessation of normal hematopoiesis [development of blood cells – Ed.],” comments Liubov Krakovian, Head of the Rivne Children’s Hospital’s Oncohematological Department. “Right now two thirds of children being treated at the department need blood-based products.” In general, the department’s blood requirements can be met with less than one hundred persons donating blood each month. However, the young patients’ parents, despite their best efforts, simply can not provide this number of donors, because a person cannot donate blood more often than once every 60 days, while children need these products every day.
