Kyiv’s tropical plants collection is safe

The Hryshko National Botanic Garden is preparing for the winter: they are selling surplus plants to Kyivites, while the greenhouses will be heated with independent boilers. The garden assures Kyivites that such a sale is held every season, so there is nothing to worry about

Kyivites heard a frightening news report a few days ago, stating that the greenhouse collection of the Hryshko National Botanical Garden (NBG) was being partially sold away. Heating problems that may arise later this year were cited as the reason for the sale. Therefore, to save money on winter heating, some greenhouses were allegedly being closed, and their green residents sold to Kyivites. The garden’s administration says, though, that there has been nothing special to the sale, as it has been involving the plants that are currently surplus to requirements, and such sale is usually done every season. It will have no impact whatsoever on the functioning of this green oasis of the capital. Still, the conditions are currently such that it is better to prepare for the winter well in advance.

“Due to the difficult funding situation and the need to prepare for the winter, the Hryshko NBG is forced to cut off heating to some greenhouses, reducing the total greenhouse area and moving the collection to more densely populated facilities. As a result, we are now able to sell cheaply the surplus plants which have great phytoncidic properties and can improve the living conditions for humans,” reads the official explanation offered at the garden’s website on behalf of the administration to all persons concerned with the sale of some tropical plants.

The employees claim that the old greenhouses that need repairs anyway will be prioritized for the cut-off. The rest of them will be heated with independent boilers, which the garden transitioned to a few years ago, spurning the services of the Kyivenerho CHP utility. The exhibition greenhouse is safe, and an exhibition of tropical plants will be opened there, as usually, this December. Of course, much depends on how severe this year’s winter will be, but the garden’s employees are sure that the plants will survive it in any case.

“We have a large collection, and sell surpluses. When the collection has many specimens belonging to the same species, this increases the greenhouse area we need to heat at winter. We can reduce the area, so that heating is restricted to the facilities we really need. We have always done so, selling away our surpluses, especially large-scale plants that take up a lot of space, or those very well represented in the collection, such as cacti and ferns. We are working along these lines this year as well,” employee of the Department of Tropical Plants Yulia told us.

By the way, the garden’s plant store’s employees say that the sale has just begun, so florists are very much welcome there. The plants are sold at quite affordable prices, ranging from 15 to 85 hryvnias per item. They are also quite diverse, including, for instance, orchids and ficus trees as well as palm trees and ivies.
