On the significance of photography

Visual designer Josh Begley has shown how the front page of one of the world’s oldest news media, The New York Times, changed over time
28 February, 11:02

NYT is the oldest and third most popular American daily newspaper. It was founded on September 18, 1851 and has been published continuously ever since. The changing design of its front page got Brooklyn artist Josh Begley interested. He collected scans of NYT’s front pages, starting in 1852 and ending in 2017. For several decades, the newspaper’s front pages contained only text, but the first black-and-white photos appeared there in the early 1910s. Since that time, no issue of the newspaper has lacked pictures, which switched to color as early as 1997. A year before that, NYT’s online version was launched.

It is noticeable that throughout the news publication’s lifetime, its editors have experimented with different fonts. Over time, the most successful of them proved their viability.

As you know, Den/The Day pays great attention to photographic art, and in addition to careful selection of photos we print on our pages, this newspaper has annually organized a competition for the best photos which reflect the preceding year’s developments in the country. Subsequently, an exhibition of such photos tours Ukrainian cities, sponsored by our partners. Den’s photo exhibition is currently in Pryluky, and we suggest you follow the news in the newspaper and on the website to be the first to find out which city will be next.
