“Some 100,000 Ukrainians live here”

Leonid TKACHUK, chairman, Association of Ukrainians in Transnistria:
“Ukraine is perhaps the most interested party in the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict – in particular, because today some 100,000 Ukrainians live here.
“At a briefing with Minister Kozhara and President Shevchuk a statement was made to the effect that the problem would have been settled by 2015. However, I do not think the process will go that fast. Yevgeny Shevchuk mentioned that the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic expected to see the solution of transportation and communications problems. It is clear that once these issues are solved, the question of political settlement can be put on the agenda.
“So if in this short span of time Ukraine is able to cope with numerous issues, and there are some changes for the better, it will be a plus for its foreign policy and image. We are very concerned about this, and we would also make every effort to find a solution.
“In Transnistria, Leonid Kozhara’s visit is regarded favorably not only by Ukrainians, but by the entire population. People know all too well the role Ukraine has played and how it helped during the development of the Transnistrian conflict. Moreover, Ukrainian policy does not overlook the will of the local population. On the contrary, it takes this will into account. It is also clear that no one can solve this problem better than Ukraine. Today is the moment of truth. We will see if Ukraine is up to it or not.
“However, I am convinced that the problems which have amassed in the past years can be solved this year, in 2013, provided there is enough goodwill. If this goes through, then the political settlement of the conflict should be the next stage.
“Leonid Kozhara also said at the briefing that Transnistria has a unique situation, as a large proportion of its population is made up by ethnic Ukrainians, citizens of Ukraine, and therefore their problems need to be solved. This is just a cliche, but I believe we will feel more specific help from Ukraine [during its presidency over the OSCE. – Ed.] in the solving of problems in our education, culture, and other areas.”
