“A step toward Ukraine”
Unique Ukrainian language textbook for foreignersForeigners are involved in many business, scientific, and social projects in Ukraine. These foreigners are, of course, interested in studying Ukrainian, but cannot find any textbooks to do so. This problem was dealt with by the Department of Ukrainian Studies and Education at the International Institute of Education, Culture and Contacts with the Diaspora (MIOK). The institute has had to organize workshop seminars, summer schools for people from the Ukrainian Diaspora, and help schools and chairs of Ukrainian studies abroad. This led them to come up with the idea of producing scientific and methodical literature that would meet modern standards, be interesting and effective, and thus to turn the study process into an exciting experience. This is how the project “A Step Toward Ukraine” appeared. Naturally, such an endeavor requires considerable resources, mainly specialists in teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language (who have started to be trained at some philology faculties only recently), as well as book designers, programmers, photographs, actors to read the text and sing the songs, audio engineers — considering that a modern textbook is a set of books for the student, the lecturer, an audio disk, and intensive language course software. It took MIOK three years to come up with three Ukrainian language textbooks for foreigners: KROK (a set of textbooks for students at various levels, compiled in accordance with European language study recommendations; KROK – 1, which corresponds to A1-A2 levels, is already finished, while KROK – 2, made for B1 levels, is still being prepared); “A Trip to Ukraine” (textbook with exercises), and “Hitchhiking in Ukraine” (audio book with exercises).
KROK-1 is meant for the beginners. It has been tested at various educational establishments in Ukraine, Poland, Russia, Great Britain, Canada, and Germany, and has received considerable praise. At long last the Ukrainian language is duly represented across the world. Now all who wish to learn it can do so using modern interesting books. Therefore, we ask that all interested parties help finance this project.
