Activists of the National Ecological Center staged a performance in order to promote the draft law in parliament on the heat meters in every house, which should be made compulsory. Currently, only 37 percent of homes in Ukraine have them. “The government provides millions for subsidies, yet 60 percent of people have no influence over their bills,” says Andrii Zheliezny, expert of the Center. “We have prepared the draft together with the Reanimation Package of Reforms NGO; the draft has been agreed upon with the MPs and has received positive feedback from the European Commission.” It remains only to register the draft and vote on it. According to the activists, if every possible means of energy efficiency is introduced, our country could save 11 million tons of oil in the long run. And by installing shared heat meters in multi-apartment houses, the residents will be able to save 20 percent on bills for utilities. “We propose that the meters would be installed by energy companies, the costs for the operation being included in the bill over a longer term. As long as we don’t use heat meters, all the slogans about energy efficiency are just a demagogy,” Zheliezny concludes.
