Sincerely, Larysa IVSHYNA, Editor-in-Chief
A year ago our idea to start publishing an English language digest seemed rather daring if not reckless. By embarking on this project we demonstrated a way to settle the language issue in Ukraine. Our permanent readers must well remember the discussion of what language should be used, Ukrainian or Russian. We suggested both plus English, German, French, and many others. Where there is knowledge of foreign languages and adequate information people just cannot degrade. Surmounting such barriers (and the Internet proves very instrumental here!) and backwardness are incompatible notions. Thus, it is extremely important for us to know that every boy in Vinnytsia, Tavriya, Polissia, or the Carpathian Mountains can read Den (The Day), also via Internet, thus surmounting his physical rusticality. Also, we constantly invite various noted personalities and world-known scholars to contribute to this publication, so our readers can learn from them to think on a broader scale and take a firm civic stand immune to the current changeable situation.

When we finally decided to start The Day we were still not sure if the project was perhaps premature. Well, someone had to make the first step in that direction. Of course, if would have been much easier to come out with yet another scandal sheet. We remembered also that after World War II Ukrainian widows considered it their sacred duty to give their children an education.

However weakened over the past several years, the nation's potential remains "competitive" and we must at least keep it from dropping any lower. Catching up with developed countries is not enough. We must learn to forge ahead.

I would like to thank The Day's excellent team for their inspired effort and encouraging result, and address words of gratitude to our readers for their sincere appreciation.

We make every issue of the Den/The Day firmly believing in Ukraine's happier future.
