Kyiv hosted the CE Forum for the Future of Democracy. Politicians discussed the advantages and disadvantages of the various European electoral systems. Ukraine was advised to adopt the best of the European experience, while in Europe democracy is losing people’s trust, and the number of active voters is constantly dropping.

“It is due to disappointment,” said CE Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland at the Kyiv Forum. “The hopes and expectations from democratic reforms have been too ambitious, and people have been too impatient. However, political reforms are not immediately translated into changes and a better life,” he said, reports unian.net, quoting Deutsche Welle.

At the same time, Goran Lindblad, Vice-President of the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly, pointed to the chaotic nature of political life in Ukraine. He expressed his hope that the political processes in Ukraine will become more predictable in two years.

European politicians advised the Ukrainian government to pay greater attention to the judicial reform in order to reduce the number of complaints Ukrainians file against their state to the European Court of Justice.

Regarding the choice of Kyiv as the venue for this year’s European Forum, the Council of Europe spokespersons said that it has nothing to do with the electoral processes in Ukraine, because the host country is chosen two years in advance.
