January 18. 1919. The (Soviet) Provisional Workers and Peasants Government of Ukraine approved a decree On Separating the Church and State.

1944. The first serious military encounter took place between the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and NKVD troops in Volyn.

January 19. 1906. The Shershen [Hornet] magazine started publication in Kyiv, the first revolutionary satirical magazine in the history of Ukrainian journalism.

1992. On the initiative of the Ukrainian Workers’ Party and Rukh Movement reserve officers, who were citizens of Ukraine, took their loyalty oath in Kyiv.

January 20. 1661. By royal privilege the Lviv Jesuit College was granted “the status of an academy and title of a university.”

1943. The first issue of the Ukrayinske slovo [Ukrainian word] newspaper was published in Winnipeg.

January 21. 1919. A nationwide congress in the town of Khust adopted a decision to unite Transcarpathia with the Ukrainian National Republic.

1934. The XII Congress of the Communist Party of Ukraine passed a decision to transfer the capital of Ukraine from Kharkiv to Kyiv.

January 22. The Day of Ukrainian Unite.

1919. The Dyrektoriya of the UNR proclaimed the unification of the Ukrainian National Republic and Western Ukrainian National Republic in a single united Ukraine.

1992. The First Congress of Ukrainians took place in Kyiv.

January 23. 1930. The KP(b)U Central Committee approved a decision obliging party organizations to start dispossessing the kulaks in the regions of total collectivization.

1992. An exchange of notes took place in Kyiv between Ukraine and the US on establishing full-fledged diplomatic relations.

January 24. 1944. The Korsun-Shevchenko offensive operation of the First and Second Ukrainian Fronts began.

1996. A memorandum On Cooperation between Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and Sejm of Lithuania was signed in Vilnius.
