“Donate A Book to Chornukhy!” Drive Gains Momentum

19 November, 00:00

On November 14, the joint drive of The Day and Olga Herasymyuk, “Donate a Book!,” was taken one step further, as Mykola Zhulynsky, director of the Shevchenko Institute of Literature at the National Academy of Sciences and former vice premier of Ukraine, visited our editorial office. As was to be expected, he did not come empty-handed: several sizable boxes of books added to the stock of the future Chornukhy Library. What came as a pleasing surprise was the fact that each of the contributed volumes is unique in its own special way. Coming in limited editions, these books are hard to come by. Among his gifts to the library are the two first volumes of the complete academic collection of works by Taras Shevchenko (Naukova Dumka [scientific thought] Publishing House). The complete series to be released includes 12 volumes, 800 pages each. With funding in short supply, the remaining ten volumes are still biding their time at the publishing house. Mykola Zhulynsky has also contributed the first five published volumes of the 250-volume series of the world’s best classics, the first volume of the complete collection of works by Oles Honchar, and a comprehensive tome of Selected Works by Serhiy Yefremov... It is only natural that the literary critic presented his own works, Word and Fate (literary portraits from Skovoroda to Stus), and To Assert Oneself Culturally. The Day, in turn, presented to Mykola Zhulynsky its own pride and joy, the book Ukraine Incognita, which pleased him immensely, for, as the historian of literature put it, he has all of the clippings of articles included in the book. Now reading them will be more convenient... Academician Zhulynsky also presented to the editorial office a set of CDs, Dictionaries of Ukraine — an Integrated Lexicographic System, which is sure to please our attentive readers. In sum, is it beginning to look like as if before long it will be possible to pursue research at the Chornukhy Library.
