The Parliamentary Dimension of Euro-Atlantism

22 October, 00:00

With a month left before the NATO Prague summit, which is supposed to announce a new enlargement of the Alliance, nothing is yet clear about the prospects of further cooperation between Ukraine and NATO. These issues will be discussed on the eve of the summit at a special session of the Ukraine-NATO Commission, Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Anatoly Zlenko said on October 18. It is known that a new working plan of cooperation is in the pipeline for the summit.

It is apparently Verkhovna Rada, the legislative branch of power, that should play a special role in pursuing the strategy of Ukraine’s movement toward the NATO-based security system. NATO liaison office head Lee Merrick, chair of the parliamentary committee for security and defense Heorhy Kriuchkov, and his deputy Borys Andresiuk seem to have had a lively discussion of the Ukrainian military reform on October 18, during the visit of NATO International Secretariat expert Robert Wenmarkers.
