Will There Be Early Verkhovna Rada Elections?

01 February, 00:00

“What will be the future course of events after the parliamentary majority decision to dismiss Oleksandr Tkachenko as Speaker and Adam Martyniuk as his deputy?” The Day’s Dmytro SKRIABIN asked People’s Deputy Volodymyr FILENKO (Reforms Congress).

“I think the majority will have its decision fulfilled one way or another. I still do not think this will save the current Verkhovna Rada and the latter will not exist long in its present composition. Early parliamentary elections are quite likely to be held in the fall, if not in the summer. From this angle, everything that is going to happen in Parliament in the immediate future will become largely meaningless.”

“Is a Belarusian scenario possible in Ukraine in case of early elections?”

“I think not. Neither the Right nor the Left opposition will have inner strength to guard, let us say, a united parliament.”

“What is your attitude to the Left minority’s appeal for help to Chairman of the Russian State Duma Gennady Selezniov?”

“This a good illustration to the decades-old history of the Ukrainian Communists. To pursue their own aims, they will clamor for independence and the Constitution, while remaining a fifth column for the Communist Party of the Russian Federation.”
