Dynamo players hit the goal, while the Danes hit... the legs

17 July, 00:00

Last Wednesday Dynamo Kyiv soccer players took the first step to participate in the 1999/2000 Champions League tournament. Our team again got a Danish club to play with. In previous years, Dynamo also used to beat Silkeborg, Brondbu and Olborg in the qualification phase. Now again, Olborg, last season's Danish champion, hosted a game with the champions of Ukraine. Prince Hamlet's compatriots must have developed a «Ukrainian syndrome,» and they were clearly afraid of their rivals.

In the first half, the hosts could not keep pace with the guests. Stormy clouds had been gathering over Olgborg's goal area, but the goal scored by Dynamo's «chief cook and bottle-washer» Serhiy Rebrov in the 18th minute could hardly be called the result of a team effort.

By the end of the first half, the Kyivans had managed to enhance their superiority. Following a sure pass from Artem Yashkiv, the team's newcomer Maksym Shatskykh easily toed the ball into the goal space. With the score 2:0 in an away match, it became a forgone conclusion as to who was going through to the next leg. True, the Danes tried to retrieve their losses in the second half. The goal the hosts kicked at the very beginning of the second half encouraged them to play more actively. They even tried to equalize at the end of the game. But the desperate assault on Shovkovsky's goal yielded no results, with the score remaining 2:1 in favor of the guests.

At first glance, an away victory guarantees success on the aggregate of two matches. But the ever-cautious Dynamo coaches ventured to suppose that it would only be clear in a fortnight in Kyiv which club will get a pass to the League.
