We Fell a Little More

18 May, 00:00
By Dmytro SKRIABIN, The Day The economic situation in Ukraine "has sharpened somewhat," said Premier Valery Pustovoitenko at a May 10 Cabinet meeting, where the results of the nation's economy for January-April 1999 were discussed. He criticized the performance of a number of leaders of executive agencies, which had not taken appropriate measures to prevent the drop in industrial output.

The fall in industrial production for the first four months of this year was 2.7% compared to the corresponding period in 1998, and in April, 6.1% compared to March, Interfax-Ukraine reports.

Against this bleak background People's Deputy Oleksandr Lavrynovych commented at The Day's request on the statements by the President and Cabinet concerning their constant concern about the development of small and medium business: "This is just like an impotent saying he constantly takes part in increasing the nation's birth-rate."
