Murderer of US Volunteer Sentenced to Death

30 March, 00:00
The Chernihiv Oblast Court has sentenced Volodymyr Mynko to execution by firing squad for having killed US Peace Corps volunteer Victor Etienne Werlough. The crime was committed in September last year. Mynko, set free after serving a ten-year term for robbery and theft, shadowed the victim for three months. Mynko's accomplice, a guest of Werlough's, drugged the host's dinner with clopheline and opened the door to the assailant. Finding no money in the apartment, Mynko savagely beat the almost unconscious American for one and a half hours and then stabbed him. At last the criminal found a wallet with $200. The murderer was surprised by neighbors. Grabbing a computer and telephone, Mynko dashed out of the room. Werlough died of blood loss. This was the first murder of a US Peace Corps volunteer in the CIS, Valentyna KUZNETSOVA reports. Mynko was found guilty under Article 93, item a); Article 142, part 3; and Article 142, part 3, and was sentenced to capital punishment. His accomplices received various terms of imprisonment.
