NEWS IN BRIEF

30 March, 00:00
From Meridian to Europe
Gone are the times when karate was outlawed and led an illegal existence in small sport halls or even basements. Today many go in for this sport, which was again confirmed by the tenth jubilee championship of Ukraine held at Kyiv's Meridian Sports Complex.

120 masters of the kio-kushinkai karate from all Ukrainian regions competed not only for medals but also to qualify for the championship of Europe to be held in May at the Kyiv Sports Palace.

As chairman of the Karate Federation Stanislav Blyzniuk noted, athletes from Kyiv, Zhovti Vody, and Dnipropetrovsk oblast, proved best prepared for this test and won most of the awards. The most spectacular bout was conducted by many-time champions of Europe Oleksandr Lapko and Volodymyr Zadorozhny in the most prestigious over 90 kg. weight category, with the former winning, reports Oleksandr HONCHARUK, The Day.

Handball
The Ukrainian women's national team, having lost to the French 20:24 in a qualification match of the European championship, with finals to be held in December this year in Norway, needed to win in Kyiv by a margin of five goals. Unfortunately, the return match did not rise to the expectations of Ukrainian handball fans, ending in a 19:19 draw. Meanwhile, the home team greatly surpasses the French, as far as selection of players is concerned. The finals will take place again without us!
