What Do the President

03 November, 00:00

Ivano-Frankivsk residents had an exciting experience watching an hour-long call-in with Mykhailo Vyshyvanok, head of the oblast state administration, carried on the local Channel-402. The next day he, or rather his straight answers to straight questions, were the talk of the town, especially his response to a woman wanting to know if Mr. Vyshyvanok will vote for Mr. Kuchma in the next campaign.

The man said he did not change his views and that "I have always respected Mr. Kuchma and will continue to respect him. I will back him up to the very last moment, like the musicians playing onboard the Titanic."

Mr. Vyshyvanok may have wanted to display his erudition or it was meant as a joke, a good one, to be sure, but it sounded rather dubious on the air, leaving local analysts to guess if the situation in Ukraine has reached a point where drawing parallels with a sinking ocean liner seems appropriate. Or maybe it was a hint addressed at certain other ranking politicos. Anyway, everyone is eager to see Mr. Vyshyvanok on their TV again, hoping that next time he will be even more to the point.
