Kasparov Against Ivanchuk? Why Not?

13 October, 00:00
Garry Kasparov responded with enthusiasm to the proposition of chess tournament organizer Bessel Kok of Belgium to schedule a match between Garry Kasparov and the FIDE world chess champion, which will take place in Las Vegas this December.

According to an unofficial but trustworthy source, it was actually Kasparov who suggested the idea, although the champion himself denies it. Yet, he is even prepared to cancel a scheduled match with Aleksey Shirov, who has gained his right to participate in the match by winning a qualifying competition. Of course, the champion is also ready to sacrifice Shirov's interests.

If the proposition is accepted, theoretically one of the Ukrainian chess players (for example, Vasyl Ivanchuk) will finally be able to compete for the world champion title.

At the same time, FIDE world champion Anatoly Karpov is trying to persuade FIDE Congress delegates in Elista, Russia, to cancel the Las Vegas tournament. Still, the chances of it being canceled are very small.
