Den’s Photo Exhibition 2013 will open in Mykolaiv on June 26. The exhibition will feature 160 winning photos that participated in the 15th Den’s International Photo Contest. A special section of the exhibition will be devoted to the Euromaidan events. Den’s editor-in-chief Larysa Ivshyna and Mykolaiv Regional Council head Taras Kremin will open the event.

In addition, the opening day will see roundtable “Intellectual Unity of Southern Ukraine with the Nation,” where leaders of the region and the city, members of the creative class, researchers, and journalists will be present. The forum will be broadcast live by local TV stations YES-TV and Mykolaiv Regional TV and Radio Company. The meeting will involve live connections with Odesa and Kherson. During the roundtable, Ivshyna will present Den’s Library publications and in particular the newspaper’s latest book series “Subversive Literature.”

As part of Den’s Days in Mykolaiv, sponsors and supporters of the newspaper will fund donation of books from Den’s Library to local libraries, schools, and military units. Before closing the photo exhibition, the organizers will announce the winner of Mykolaiv People’s Choice Award. Every visitor can contribute to determining the winning photo by choosing the picture they feel most worthy of the award.

Den’s photo contest involves not only professionals, but also beginners from all over Ukraine. The special category “World as Seen by Children” allows photographers under the age of 18 to express themselves. The exhibition tours the country each year, making stops not only in major cities with population exceeding 1,000,000 but in small towns as well.
“Although Den’s Photo Exhibition will be held in Mykolaiv for the first time, personally, I had already been to at least two such events,” head of Mykolaiv Regional Council Taras Kremin told us. “My family is subscribed to Den and we try to keep up with all its new products. I really like the series Ukraine Incognita and have bought a few photo albums as well. I was especially impressed with “Armor-Piercing Political Writing” and The Power of the Soft Sign, the latter book devoted to the problematic pages of Ukrainian history. I once joined my fellow philologists and Den’s Mykolaiv bureau to hold the presentation of this publication. It was a big surprise to find out how many people were willing to see Ukrainian history cleared of lies and how many people were wanting to have Ukraine finally learn the lessons of its past. In my opinion, everything what is now done by Den’s journalists and readers in Ukraine and worldwide deserves more attention and adequate support from the public. Live communication is very valuable in terms of getting new experience, it opens new possibilities for building common strategy for future action. It is therefore remarkable that the photo exhibition will not be held online (though in view of the development of modern technology, it would be quite possible) or in the virtual space, but in the real world, where every visitor will be able to see not only the works on display, but also each other. Some of the works can be considered to have true artistic value, as they become a rarity already at the moment of their birth. All this proves that Den has a team of professionals that sets the tone not only in journalism, but also in photography. Improving national patriotic education is very important today. This spirit should prevail not only in the army, but also among the common people. Culture, science and education are all very sensitive categories, which need constant attention. What is happening in Crimea and eastern Ukraine should force us to correct our mistakes. Roundtable “Intellectual Unity of Southern Ukraine with the Nation,” which is to be held as part of Den’s Days in Mykolaiv, should set the tone of the national debate on this topic among that part of society which, though not holding the reins of power, creates intellectual space and cultural aura of our country.”

The opening of Den’s Photo Exhibition 2013 will take place at the Gallery of Mykolaiv Local History Museum in the Old Navy Barracks at 29 Naberezhna Street at 2 p.m. on

Thursday, June 26. The exhibition will run till July 20. We invite all interested persons to benefit from free entrance!
