Student poster contest dedicated to Den’s 15th anniversary is over
08 November, 00:00

National Lviv Polytechnic University and International Institute of Education, Culture and Relations with Diaspora (IIEC) prepared an intellectual present for us. Back in June these institutions announced the start of the student poster contest dedicated to the newspaper’s anniversary.

“The idea of the contest appeared during the meeting of students and teachers of Lviv Polytechnic University with Den/The Day’s editor-in-chief Larysa Ivshyna,” said Iryna KLIUCHKOVSKA, head of IIEC. “It was a roundtable where students discussed their future. That is when we suggested Larysa Ivshyna we participate in celebrating Den’s 15th anniversary by holding a contest for the best image page as the students see it.”

As it turned out, organizers had more than one motive. According to Kliuchkovska, they hoped to involve youth in reading Den – “one of the most professional and intellectual periodicals in Ukraine that shapes the public outlook of a future specialist.”

At first International Institute of Education, Culture and Relations with Diaspora planned to involve only the students of Lviv Polytechnic in participation in the contest, but later the students of the Lviv National Academy of Arts and Ivan Trush Lviv State College of Decorative and Applied Arts were also invited.

“It was a pleasant surprise that we received a poster from Kramatorsk, Donetsk oblast,” says Kliuchkovska, “It was a beautiful work, with a wonderfully written letter attached to it, done by Yaroslava Savchuk, who reads Den regularly and even asked her friends for help with the poster.”

Overall, 50 works from 37 participants were submitted. Kliuchkovska is sure that creating them was not easy for one had to know the newspaper’s creed and the principles it is guided by.

Nevertheless, the participants took a responsible approach to the task.

“While getting ready to the contest, I looked through Den’s archives for the last 15 years to understand the concept deeper and be able to reflect it in the poster, though I have been reading the newspaper periodically before that,” said Natalia MIKICHURA, student of Lviv Polytechnic, future designer. “I did not set my expectations for winning but I did hope that the jury would like the idea of my poster since I have been participating in contests like this before, for example creating a logo for new trains of Lviv Railways.”

But the sixth-year student of Ivan Trush Lviv State College of Decorative and Applied Arts was not familiar with Den before the beginning of the contest. Though, while preparing for the contest he started reading the newspaper and also paid great attention to its design to make “a sincere poster.”

For some students this contest was an opportunity to learn about not only Den newspaper, but its photo competition as well.

“I knew that Den is popular among intellectuals, and after I took part in the contest, I found myself interested in it as well. Den’s Photo Competition was a discovery to me. I am a photographer, I reveal the country through the lens, that is why I want to submit my works to Den’s Photo Competition next year.” Denys Vasiliev, student of Lviv Polytechnic shared his impressions.

“Of course, the works differ by the level of professionalism,” says Iryna Kliuchkovska. “But all of them are interesting, and what matters even more, they are deep. My favorite is a poster by Orysia Kryvenko, student of the Lviv National Academy of Arts. In that poster Den is portrayed as an eye that attentively watches everything that is happening in Ukraine. I think, that this is only the beginning of our artistic cooperation with Den. I would love to continue organizing such contests in the future involving youth not only from Lviv but from whole Ukraine.”

The participants’ works are available for viewing at Den’s website. And the authors of the best posters (Natalia Mikichura, Denys Vasiliev, Daryna Kysla, Taras Hres, Marta Brukh, Klymentia Dymyd and Daryna Makovetska) will be awarded with the books from Den/The Day’s Library and a year-long subscription for the Friday issue of the newspaper.
