Lviv – The Day has always paid a lot of attention to charity. This article is no exception – its heroes are Yurchyk and Sofiika Vozniak, two aurally impaired children from the village of Tudorkovychi, Sokalsky raion, Lviv oblast.

These kids have lived in a world of absolute silence. They have never heard their parents’s voices, or the birds’ singing, or the patter of the rain, or the rustle of the trees...

Yet these children can be helped. Of course, the sooner, the better. The children have been examined, the hospitals – in Moscow and Warsaw – where they will soon be operated on (Sofiika in July and Yurchyk, in October) have even been chosen. The only problem is money.

Earlier this year Sofia, their grandmother, asked the management of the Lviv TV company Mist to tell about the children and their problems.

The journalists immediately responded with a social advert. It told the two children’s stories, and showed the details of a charitable bank account, several times a day. Unfortunately, it failed to raise much money. Later, the Mist journalists addressed the local singer Ostap, who has some experience with charity fund raising.

“We had to shelve it for a short while, because at the moment I was engaged in raising funds for Martusia Susulovska (information on Martusia is available on The Day’s web site in the section Help Needed. – Author),” Ostap told The Day. “Although the issue with that little girl is not yet certain, we were able to garner a fairly hefty sum for her. In the same way, by means of a charity concert, we also want to raise money to treat Yurchyk and Sofiika.”

Have you seen the children?

“Yes, their grandma brought them here. Both Yurchyk and

Sofiika are very nice, well-mannered kids, with wide, intelligent eyes. But it just hurts you to look at them...

I think everyone’s duty is to help (if that is possible, of course) by donating at least one hryvnia.”

All in all, the siblings’ treatment will cost 300,000 hryvnias. Donations can be made at Maria Zankovetska Theater at 6 pm on 13 June, during the concert “Sounds of Life.” The proceedings from the concert will be used to purchase implants and necessary medication, as well as to cover traveling expenses.

The ticket prices were first set at 50 to 150 hryvnias. Later, Andrii Matsiak, the manager of the theater, ordered the price down to 30 hryvnias for the cheapest ticket. “This might attract a larger audience,” said Matsiak. He also added that the theater was a fully engaged co-organizer of the action as it granted the actors free facilities and equipment, and took responsibility for the sales of tickets and printing services.

According to the mastermind (and at the same time the host) of the charitable concert “Sounds of Life,” the singer Ostap, the variegated and fascinating two-hour program will include his friends, the performers Olesia Kyrychuk and Lilia Vavryn, the vocal formation Pikardiiska Tertsia, the ballet Fiesta, and the theater’s orchestra led by Bohdan Mochurad. “Our ambition is to convey the meaning of the word ‘to hear’,” said the singer as he asked everyone to join in the charitable action: it is not only Leopolitans who will be able to come to the concert, but also all The Day’s readers who are not indifferent to the fates of the Vozniak children.
