Halychyna’s art style

Lviv-based artists adhere to Easter Eve versnissage exhibits

LVIV — Shortly before Easter, Lviv’s Palace of Art hosted the third Autumnal Salon exhibit. Works of art could be submitted only by members of the Lviv Branch of the Artists’ Union of Ukraine — and these works were admitted only if verified as ones made during the last year. The project organizers believe this is the project’s “punch line”: displaying objets d’art still to be exposed to public view. This time a total of 130 Artists’ Union members — painters, ceramicists, those specializing in stained glass, textiles, and prints — agreed to take part in this project. Each could submit two works. The Autumnal Salon’s jury will determine the winners and present awards toward the end of April. Its Grand Prix is an image of St. Luke, copy of the one embellishing the portal of Lviv’s Palace of Art.

Dmytro HUNTS, head of the fine arts department, Lviv Branch of the National Artists’ Union of Ukraine, told The Day that such Autumnal Salon exhibits have been restoring beautiful — and all but forgotten — creative Halychyna traditions. In fact, the first such exhibit took place in Lviv shortly before Easter, in 1939.

This April, residents and guests of Lviv will have an opportunity of exploring this museum in Lviv, at 17 Kopernik St.
