On June 30 the Central Election Commission (CEC) registered the first presidential
candidates, incumbent President Leonid Kuchma and Communist Party of Ukraine
leader Petro Symonenko, who have gathered the required number of signatures
for nomination. The CEC has registered a total 19 contenders for presidential
candidates, one of them (People's Deputy Ivan Bilas) having withdrawn his
candidacy. It took the CEC 17 and 15 days to check out the signature sheets
of Messrs. Kuchma and Symonenko respectively (Kuchma's representatives
handed in the sheets on June 14, Symonenko's on June 16), Interfax-Ukraine
reports.
According to the contenders themselves, over one million signatures
have already been collected to support Yevhen Marchuk, Yuri Kostenko, and
Oleksandr Moroz, The Day's Dmytro SKRIABIN reports. July
13 is the deadline for handing in the signature sheets. The law on presidential
elections gives the contenders another ten days to correct mistakes and
collect lacking signatures. The deadline for candidate registration has
been set at August 2.
