Europe to Be Squeezed In Meridian
"Why was Ukraine, of all places, chosen to host the continental championship?"
"Our federation and athletes won this honor with their successes in the international arena: the Ukrainian karatekas can boast of champion's titles and a fourth place as a team."
"But you can't hold the championship at the Sports Palace."
"Unfortunately. Due to the high rent and a simultaneous trade show the competition will take place at the Meridian Sports Complex. The premises are cozy and well-equipped, but it is too small for a European championship, for it can only house up to around 1000 spectators."
"You, of course, expect a full house."
"About 200 athletes and coaches alone are expected to arrive. 22 countries have already confirmed their participation in the tournament. Of course, Kyiv will be visited by not only the European kiokushinkai leaders but also by the Japanese, the fathers of this sport. The well-known Fuji Company will make a film at the request of the latter, to be shown on Japanese national television."
"Will the hosts field a complete team?"
"All twelve - in the four men's and two women's categories - are ready
to go onto the mat. The national team is headed by European champion Oleksandr
Zadorozhny from Zhovti Vody and the twice continental champion Oleksandr
Lapko from Kyiv. But they will face very high-skilled, experienced, and
prize winning rivals. So the spectators won't get bored."
