Meridian Sports Complex Readies
For Karate Kids
Less than a month remains until the European Karate championship, slated
to begin in late May. Already the Ukrainian capital has received well-known
Japanese representatives of this sport popular among young people: General
Secretary of the Kiokushinkai International Organization Katsuhito Gorai
and Fuji Tewi Manager Yoshi Yi. As Stanislav Blyzniuk, President of the
Ukrainian Kiokushinkai Federation told The Day, the championship
will take place on the highest possible level with approximately 150 competitors
from 22 countries taking part. The hosts place their greatest hopes in
Oleksandr Lapo, who has already been European champ more than once and
three-time national champion 17 year-old Yuri Pimenov.
The world-famous Fuji Company plans to make a documentary on the championship.
The film will include all the final bouts, interviews with the best coaches
and umpires, and a story about Kyiv. It will be run on the main Japanese
government television channel with an audience of some 7,000,000.
